The Dolpo area, located in Nepali Himalayas Mountains and reaching five thousand meters above the sea level, is part of the Ali area in ancient times. High in altitude, sparsely populated, and surrounded by the Snow Mountains and holy lakes, the Dolpo area is the rare pure land on Earth.
Due to the remoteness of the location and the resulting inaccessibility in transportation of the Dolpo area, only our venerable Guru, H.E. Yeshe Sangpo Rinpoche accepted local residents’ earnest invitations and visited there several times to give precious teachings. Therefore, the Guru, with his unbounded compassions and merits, has long been deeply admired and beloved by local residents.
In 2013, Rinpoche was invited to preside over the Dharma assembly of reciting more than one-hundred Million Vajra Guru Mantras. Local faithful disciples donated a piece of auspicious land and beseeched Rinpoche to establish a Buddhist Monastery that can house the Dharma assembly of reciting more than one-hundred million Vajra Guru Mantras every year. After Rinpoche returned to the Samye Memorial Buddhist Vihara in Kathmandu and consulted with the venerable H.E. Khandro Pema Chodron about the possibility of establishing a Buddhist Monastery in Dolpo, he received the strong support from Khandro. Khandro said: "It is certainly a precious rarity and a benevolent circumstance to have these faithful disciples in such a remote area where Guru Rinpoche stepped his feet.” Therefore, with Khandro’s strong encouragement, Rinpoche soon started the plan of building the Samye Memorial Yogis’ Buddhist Monastery in Dolpo. May this benevolent circumstance filled with supreme virtues grow and benefit even more sentient beings.
